For almost a decade, the Texas Tribune—a nonpartisan, nonprofit media organization that engages and informs Texans about public policy, politics, government and statewide issues—has been hosting ‘TribFest’ in downtown Austin in the shadow of the Texas Capitol Building.

This year, Jennifer Mercieca of the Department of Communication has been invited to participate in two events at TribFest on Saturday, September 29, 2018.

Mercieca will be part of a panel discussion titled, “The Political Rhetoric of Donald Trump and Alex Jones: On Fake News and Weaponized Communications.” She will also appear in a live recording of the podcast, “The Gist.”

“I hope that people will think critically about the crisis of public trust and conspiracy theory,” Mercieca said. “In particular, I hope that people will try to solve these problems.”

Other featured speakers include former U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, Arizona Senator Jeff Flake, former Dallas county sheriff Lupe Valdez, and U.S. Representative Beto O’Rourke.

The panel discussion is part of Open Congress, a free open-to-the-public street festival held on Austin’s historic Congress Ave. RSVP to attend Open Congress here. Tickets to the podcast recording can be purchased here; TribFest pass holders will be admitted to this event for free on a first-come, first-served basis.
