Hiring Opportunities
Professor & Director of Journalism
Texas A&M University invites applications for the position of Director of Journalism in a newly revitalized journalism program, in its recently reconfigured Department of Communication & Journalism (effective September 2022; formerly the Department of Communication). This is a full-time, tenured, 9-month academic appointment, starting in fall 2023. The position is at the rank of Professor, with additional duties and compensation provided for directing the journalism program. The new director will play a leading role in efforts to expand journalism education and research at Texas A&M University; helping to train future generations of professional and ethical journalists, able to thrive in modern versions of the newsroom.
Candidates should have extensive experience as professional journalists as well as distinguished records in academic journalism and/or administration. The director will teach undergraduate courses in their areas of expertise, while also working in collaboration with the department head and department leadership to develop and implement plans for strategic growth. These plans will target: (1) curricular development, (2) expansion of a cutting-edge immersive internship program, and (3) hiring of faculty to support both its research and teaching missions in the communication and journalism disciplines.
The Department of Communication and Journalism offers and administers PhD, MA, BA, and BS degrees. It has over 40 faculty members, more than 35 communication graduate students, and over 1,700 undergraduate students. We currently administer a university studies journalism degree to just over 80 students, with another 80+ students minoring in journalism. We wish to grow journalism to between 400 and 500 majors over the next five years, with additional growth of the minor under our mission of promoting competent, engaged, informed, and ethical citizen communicators. Further information regarding the department is available at http://comm.tamu.edu. The Department of Communication and Journalism embraces the development of a socially and culturally diverse intellectual community. Part of our mission is to extend the reach of journalism, by promoting diversity in the news and the newsroom, with particular preference given to candidates who can help us fulfill our land grant mission of serving diverse communities in Texas. We welcome candidates who can help the department serve students who are underrepresented in communication and/or journalism fields; whose careers demonstrate a shared commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Qualifications
A terminal degree in Journalism, Communication or related discipline is required, with preference given to candidates holding a PhD in journalism. Successful candidates will have distinguished records in both journalistic and academic professions.
