Bio

Maria Martha Bruno is a Brazilian doctoral student at Texas A&M. With 20 years of experience in the media industry, she has worked as a reporter and editor-in-chief in broadcast and digital news outlets in Brazil and other countries. From 2013 to 2020, she also worked as a producer for Al Jazeera English and NBC News. In the early 2010s, Maria Martha lived in Buenos Aires, where she worked as an international correspondent for Brazil’s largest news portal, Universo Online (UOL). She keeps a strong connection with Argentina and visits the country annually.

In Brazil, Maria Martha runs Gênero e Número (Gender & Number) with four other women. GN is a data-driven media company that tackles gender and race issues in the country and in Latin America.

Ten years after finishing a master’s in Communication Studies at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, she went back to academia to refresh her knowledge. Maria Martha’s research intends to investigate the implications of far-right policies and discourses during president Jair Bolsonaro’s term on race and gender in Brazil. Besides being addicted to politics, she is also a pool lap and open waters swimmer.
