What we want

We are pleased to announce the opening of our dynamic yet analytical position of Software Application Developer II! We are looking for a developer who will primarily focus on supporting WordPress and related plugins and will secondarily code department applications as necessary. What you need to know

COVID-19 information:  Texas A&M University monitors and updates our recruiting, hiring and onboarding processes to align with local, state and federally mandated health guidelines to keep employees, prospective employees, and visitors as safe as possible.  Each department has established both remote and in-person procedures for conducting these processes, which include sanitizing common spaces, a mask policy, and maintaining safe physical distancing to the extent possible.  Departments will provide the procedures to be followed at each step of the recruiting process.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Three years of software applications developer experience

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications
  • Knowledge of: advanced analysis, troubleshooting, problem-solving, client relations skills, requirement assessment and analysis, project management methodology, and proficiency of the Information Technology Interface Library (ITIL)
  • Ability to build strong working relationships and a positive work environment 
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience with WordPress, React, Composer, Roots Bedrock and Sage, Bootstrap, Ruby on Rails, node.js/Javascript


Application Development and Support

  • Consults with users to review project plans and schedules and discusses problems or concerns
  • Designs complex programs, program modifications, or applications
  • Develops specifications based on input from the customer and creates complex design documents
  • Reviews and writes complex programs, program modifications, or applications
  • Reviews and analyzes software documentation and production results to facilitate problem resolution
  • Tests complex programs, program modifications, or applications
  • Programs rear-facing structures and foundations for all College websites and custom apps
  • Performs testing, quality assurance checks, de-bugging and troubleshooting for apps and web
  • Understanding/troubleshooting cross-browser compatibility issues

Web Programming and Support

  • Offers support to Web Team with respect to design, content assistance and communication with users
  • Maintains ADA accessibility requirements and best practices
  • Performs mobile and responsive site design
  • Performs WordPress customization, theme design and plugins
  • Plans, coordinates, communicates large scale projects e.g. web template transitions
  • Uses college helpdesk system (Freshdesk) to log work and interface with users

Education and Documentation

  • Generates documentation related to programming decisions and methods for backup professionals
  • Creates helpful articles and how-to documentation for users to better understand the inner workings of forward-facing applications, websites and services

Attend appropriate training and meeting including the IT Coordination and Zones meeting

  • Participates in training and professional development sessions when necessary including attending College IT meetings and appropriate University forums (e.g., IT Forum)
  • Performs other duties as assigned
