Abstract:
Over 8,000 nurses were recruited and sent to work in British colonies by the Colonial Nursing Association between 1896 and 1966. This chapter draft examines archival documents related to decolonization and the Association held at the Oxford Bodleian Library. It analyzes a selection of letters, poetry and recruitment articles written between 1940-1964, especially about Kenya and Uganda, in conjunction with scholarship on women and empire and archival studies, in order to interpret the significant silences within the colonial nursing archives. The paper suggests that the subject of knowledge-making in the archive becomes of especially acute importance when considering the era of decolonization. It therefore thinks critically about how the materials are selected and organized, as well as considering their content.

The Faculty Colloquium offers faculty an opportunity to discuss a work-in-progress with colleagues from different disciplines. By long-standing practice, colloquium presenters provide a draft of their current research, which is made available to members of the Glasscock Center listserv. Each colloquium begins with the presenter’s short (10-15 minute) exposition of the project, after which the floor is open for comments and queries. The format is by design informal, conversational, and interdisciplinary.

The Glasscock Center extends a warm invitation to faculty and students to join in a discussion of Dr. Howell’s work-in-progress. The paper is available to members of the Center’s listserv, or by contacting the Glasscock Center by phone at (979) 845-8328 or by e-mail at glasscock@tamu.edu.
