Undergraduate Apprentices

ABOUT: The Glasscock Center employs undergraduate students (generally in affiliated departments) to serve as paid apprentices in the Center. In addition to assisting with routine office tasks, apprentices are included in activities such as social events with visiting scholars, are encouraged to participate in the Center’s sponsored events as part of their work for the Center, and serve as liaisons with the undergraduate community on campus. Apprentices are encouraged to suggest programs, activities, projects, and funding opportunities that will benefit undergraduates. The Center’s staff is committed to involving the apprentices in the workings of the Center.

ELIGIBILITY: Undergraduate students in good standing, who have a demonstrated commitment to humanities research, and who have an interest in learning about the operation of a research center are encouraged to apply.

Ideal candidates are not approaching graduation within the same academic year in which they apply for employment.

COMPENSATION: $15/hour

Undergraduate Apprentices should have (or have the potential for developing) the basic office skills described below and a desire to learn more about the humanities and humanities research.

Some office experience is helpful but not essential. Skills required include: knowledge of office procedures and equipment; experience with social media platform management - including content creation; ability to maintain a regular schedule, a professional demeanor, and a presentable office space, to follow instructions, to work without supervision, to take accurate messages, to finish projects efficiently, and provide status reports; willingness to initiate and anticipate tasks, to offer assistance to other staff, and to learn new skills. There will be a possible opportunity for summer employment of up to 20 hours per week.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Assist with website content updates and email announcements.
  • Social media updates (Facebook, Twitter/X, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.) - including content creation.
  • Photographing events.
  • Some assistance with promotional material creation (e.g., social media graphics, flyers)
  • Assist walk-in visitors as needed.
  • Assist with the visits of scholars from outside the university.
  • Enter data, copy, and collate documents, and prepare mailings.
  • Monitor and replenish office supplies.
  • Keep office area, copy room, and kitchen organized and neat.
  • Assist with program duties as needed.
  • Assist with event set-up and take-down (including A/V technology, seating, tables, refreshments, etc.).
  • Occasional assistance with after-hours events, if available.
  • Miscellaneous tasks as required.
