“Arranging Atoms and Reading Arrangement: Science, Philosophy, and Poetics”

February 26

12:00-1:00 PM

GLAS 311

Dr. Liza Blake will present on her innovative, interdisciplinary research project Choose Your Own Poems
and Fancies, a multimedia rearrangeable edition and monograph exploring the role of arrangement in the
atom poems published by Margaret Cavendish, Duchess of Newcastle in her Poems and Fancies
(London, 1653; revised, rearranged, and reprinted 1664 and 1668). Cavendish’s 17th-century
poetic experiments have ongoing consequences for the histories and theories of reading, atomism,
literary history, and digital media.
