Fellowship Overview

PURPOSE
Support for graduate students completing a dissertation

AMOUNT
$5,000 stipend. Students typically must enroll in one research credit hour, the additional cost of which is covered by the award.

OPEN TO
Graduate students who have been admitted to candidacy for a doctoral degree, completed all formal coursework (with a few exceptions), hold a minimum graduate GPA of 3.0, passed preliminary examination, and submitted an approved dissertation proposal. Students must not be planning to graduate at the end of the summer term.

CRITERIA FOR SELECTION:

Selection for these highly competitive awards is made by a multi-disciplinary committee of Texas A&M faculty members in the humanities and humanistic social sciences who typically are members of the Glasscock Center’s Faculty Advisory Board.  Faculty members who have a graduate student applying for a fellowship may not serve on the selection committee.

ABOUT:

The Glasscock Summer Graduate Residential Fellowships are designed to support outstanding research in the humanities by providing selected graduate students a summer of residence in the Glasscock Center to focus their efforts on writing their doctoral dissertations. The Glasscock Center envisages offering several summer-long Graduate Residential Fellowships each year. The College of Arts & Sciences partners with the Center to provide support from fellows from that college.

Fellows are expected to give their full working attention to their research during the fellowship period. Therefore, they may not accept additional paid or unpaid employment during the (June/July) fellowship period.  If you are unsure of a particular situation, please contact the Glasscock Center.

ELIGIBILITY:

The fellowship is open to current graduate students at Texas A&M completing a dissertation on a humanities research topic. By the time of application, applicants must be admitted to candidacy for a doctoral degree, have completed all formal coursework (with the exception for any remaining 681, 684, 690 and 691 credit hours), hold a minimum 3.0 Graduate GPA, have passed the preliminary examination (written and oral portions), and have submitted an approved dissertation proposal. While applicants may expect to defend their dissertations at the end of the summer fellowship, they should not be graduating that summer.

Students are welcome to apply for both the semester-long and summer Graduate Residential Fellowship, but they may not hold more than one residential fellowship during their time at Texas A&M. Students may apply for both the Graduate Residential Fellowships and Graduate Research Fellowships, but, if a student is offered both, the student may only accept one or the other. Students may not hold a Glasscock Graduate Research Fellowship and Graduate Residential Fellowship concurrently.

STIPENDS AND TUITION:

Fellows will receive a scholarship stipend of $5,000 during their summer of residence and an office in the Glasscock Center.  The fellowship also includes payment for tuition and required university and college fees for the minimum number of required credit hours for the fellowship recipient (typically a single credit hour).

Fellows are expected to give their full working attention to their research during the fellowship period. Therefore, they may not accept additional paid or unpaid employment during the (June/July) fellowship period.  If you are unsure of a particular situation, please contact the Glasscock Center.

RESIDENCY EXPECTATIONS:

To enable students to conduct summer field and archival work that is necessary for their dissertations, summer Fellows are not required to be full-time residents in the Glasscock Center. They are, however, given an office in the Center. Fellows will be expected to present their research in the Colloquium series in the semester following their summer residence.

CRITERIA FOR SELECTION:

Reviewers will consider the following:

  • Content and quality of the abstract (refer to the Thesis & Dissertation Manual as needed)
  • Academic performance and productivity while at Texas A&M University.
  • Potential impact of student’s research and scholarly work on the student’s discipline and the humanities

Along with your completed application form, you must submit the following:
