Growing Old with Gratitude: A How-To Guide to Embracing Generational Transitions in Scholarship

In the last half-century, phases of camaraderie in the field of Western American history have alternated with phases of contention. Encounters between old-timers and newcomers have varied in spirit from the tense fending off of unsettling challenges to the congenial welcoming of unexpected perspectives. Landing in the role of Faculty Director of the University of Colorado’s Applied History Initiative, Patty Limerick has gained an abundance of opportunities to hand on the baton to an extraordinary cohort of emerging scholars. In this talk, Limerick will celebrate the work of younger historians who are asking questions that would never have occurred to her, coming up with findings that will carry value in arenas far beyond the academic world
