Research Interests

R.J.Q. Adams received the Ph.D. degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1972 and joined the A&M History Department in 1974. His professional interest is the history of Britain in the 20th century. He became professor of history in 1987, and from 2001 until 2004 was Claudius M. Easley, Jr., Faculty Fellow in Liberal Arts. In 2004 he was named Patricia and Bookman Peters Professor of History. Professor Adams teaches graduate and undergraduate lecture and seminar classes in modern British history; and since 1993 he has directed twelve M.A. and eleven Ph.D. students to completion of their degrees and currently chairs eight doctoral committees. Widely published here and abroad, among Professor Adams’s recent books are (with Robin W. Winks) Europe, Crisis and Conflict: 1890-1945 (New York and London: Oxford University Press, 2003); Bonar Law (London, John Murray; Stanford, CA, Stanford University Press 1999); British Politics and Foreign Policy in the Age of Appeasement, 1935-39 (London, Macmillan Ltd.; Stanford, CA., Stanford University Press, 1993 and many reprints) and Balfour: The Last Grandee (London, John Murray, 2007 and 2008). He is currently writing a book about the reign of King George V, 1910-1936.
