Research Interests
I am a third-year PhD candidate and graduate assistant lecturer whose broad area of interest is late 19th and early 20th century U.S. history, basically from the American Civil War to World War II. I am a military historian, but one who focuses on the impact of war on society, culture, and the environment (and vice versa), rather than operations and strategy. My dissertation research centers on creating a critical, comparative analysis of Civil War prisoner of war camps by examining a variety of factors (environment, role of camp commandants, personal relations, et al) that impacted rates of survival throughout the camps on both sides of the conflict. My secondary interest lies in the intertwining of immigration, nativism, and xenophobia in the 19th century. I love anything and everything about history, so Iām always up for a good conversation about our collective past!
