Bio

My research focuses on the transformations of Greek culture in two stages of its history: the transition from paganism to Christianity in late antiquity and the meeting with the West in the Renaissance. I consider the transmission of literary models from antiquity, the ways in which the classical heritage was used and transformed, and the contributions of literary and nonliterary texts to our understanding of the cultural environment that produced them.

Current Research Projects

Renaissance and post-Renaissance Greek studies: the history of the Greek revival in the West in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, the point of view of the Byzantine scholars involved in the spread of their culture, and the ways in which sixteenth-century (“post-Byzantine”) Greek intellectuals perceived both their Greek national identity and the culture of their Western hosts.
