Bio

Emma Newman (she/her pronouns) is a second-year doctorate student in the Department of Anthropology at Texas A&M University. Emma’s research focuses on topics of borderlands (theory, enforcement, and policy) and migration along the US-Mexico border. Her current work is based in South Texas and incorporates historical, ethnographic, and intersectional approaches to contemporary border studies. Emma is additionally interested in gender and women’s studies as they relate to the clandestine migrant experience.

Emma is currently working on designing and implementing an exhibition of works related to the US-Mexico borderlands. This multimedia museum exhibit will explore themes of place, space, and identity. It is scheduled to be completed and open by late April – early May of 2023 in the Memorial Student Center (Texas A&M, College Station) gallery space.

In addition to her academic research interests, Emma serves as a mentor to undergraduate students through multiple student organizations. She also serves as Cultural Chair to the Association of Anthropology Graduate Students (AAGS) and on the Advisory Board of the Melbern G. Glasscock Center for Humanities Research. She has most recently been appointed as Assistant Curator in the Anthropological Research Collections and works closely with students and faculty on community outreach initiatives and the curation of artifacts. Emma is grateful to have the opportunity to work with the Cantu Endowment and Race and Ethnic Studies Institute (RESI) in her upcoming projects as a Graduate Fellow.
