Sociology and the Threat to American Democracy

American democracy is facing potential triple threats: threats to the very existence of democracy itself, threats of the disenfranchisement of a large percentage of the population and the threats of a major legitimation crisis. Some of those threats are avoidable. Others are really going to happen – with grim consequences. Macrosociology has a lot to say about all three of these dangers. The news is not necessarily good.
