The Texas Research Data Center hosted the 2016 Federal Statistical Research Data Center (FSRDC) Annual Research Conference on September 15, 2016, and cosponsored the 2016 Racial Segregation Conference on September 16, 2016 with the Kinder Institute at Rice University. The two events featured presentations by internationally renowned historical demographer, Dr. Steven Ruggles.

At the 2016 FSRDC Annual Research Conference, Dr. Ruggles reviewed changes in Census data collection efforts from 1790 to current day. He also discussed big Census microdata, FSRDCs, and linkage of federal records. During the 2016 Racial Segregation Conference, Dr. Steven Ruggles also made a presentation titled “New Spatially Referenced Microdata.” This presentation reviewed the limitations of segregation analysis using aggregate data, the GeoLytics Neighborhood Change Database, the 2010 Longitudinal Tract Data Base (LTDB), the advantages of microdata, geographic sub-county source variables in historical microdata, the consistency of geography in IPUMS data, geographic source variables in internal Census Bureau microdata, and other issues surrounding Census microdata.
