ASPIRA Census Datathon 2024

The Census Datathon 2024 is an exciting event led by the Texas A&M University student organization, ASPIRA.

The event targets undergraduate and graduate students who are newer to data and curious about public-use Census data. Two Census Bureau data dissemination specialists, Sam Patton and Lacey Loftin, will lead the sessions and mentor students.

The goal of the Datathon is for students to have hands-on experience using Census data to produce information about their community.

EVENT OVERVIEW:

The event will be held on the Texas A&M University Campus.

Day 1 (November 8th, 8:45 AM – 5:00 PM):

Intermediate Level. Designed for students with basic experience in data analysis.

Participants will:

  • Learn how to access and work with Census data using data.census.gov and the Census API.
  • Receive training on data communication strategies.
  • Collaborate on data-driven projects that will be shared on LinkedIn to help build professional profiles.

Day 2 (November 9th, 8:45 AM – 5:00 PM):

Beginner Level. Designed for students with little to no prior data experience.

Participants will:

  • Explore Census data products and how to apply them in real-world contexts.
  • Work in groups, guided by mentors, to create a data-driven deliverable.
  • Showcase projects on LinkedIn to help build professional profiles.
