As more adults in the United States continue to identify as multiracial, knowing the health trajectories of this population, and its direct impact on how we measure and address cardiovascular disease (CVD) within this demographic becomes increasingly more crucial. Multiracial subgroups have social and political histories that can lead to distinct social perceptions and economic situations, demonstrating possible distinctive health patterns. Yet, within most health records and national surveys, these groups are either placed into a heterogeneous box or excluded due to sample size. This presentation first evaluates the magnitude of inequities in cardiovascular health (CVH) across intersectional social contexts of race, ethnicity, gender, nativity and education among single race adults. Then we evaluate the magnitude of inequities in CVH across similar intersectional axes among multiracial adults. This work utilizes pooled National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) 2013-2021 which is the largest, nationally representative current survey with both unedited racial identity data and health information. We utilized multilevel analysis of individual heterogeneity and discriminatory accuracy (MAIHDA), to create mutually exclusive strata where each individual is nested within a single stratum that includes all their social context categories. Presentation will include experience of utilization of the RDC and process of proposal development and restricted data usage of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Data.

Bio:
Rebecca Jones-Antwi is an Assistant Professor of Epidemiology in the Department of Public Health. She received her PhD in Nutrition and Health Sciences in 2020 and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in cardiovascular epidemiology and health disparities both from Emory University Rollins School of Public Health. Dr. Jones-Antwi joined Baylor as a full-time faculty member in 2023.
Dr. Jones-Antwi has experience in primary data collection, survey design, and quantitative data analysis. She currently has been awarded a career development award from the American Heart Association evaluating cardiovascular health among multiracial adults utilizing restricted NHIS data . Her research focuses on the relationship between places and health, with a focus on the contextual, social, and environmental determinants of health. The major themes center on understanding chronic disease burden across the lifecourse, migration, and multidisciplinary methodologies. |
