Bio

Dr. van Doorninck is a nautical archaeology specialist. During the past 25 years, he has been involved in the excavation and analysis of artifacts from a number of ancient shipwrecks located in the Mediterranean. Much of his research has been related to naval and maritime history and, particularly, to Byzantine naval architecture, anchors, and amphoras. Dr. van Doorninck taught undergraduate and graduate courses in nautical archaeology and ships and seafaring in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe during medieval times. He is now retired but continues to participate with the program. In addition, he now serves as a director of the Institute of Nautical Archaeology.
