Biography
Dr. John N. Singer (He/Him/His) is the Associate Director of the Race and Ethnic Studies Institute and Associate Professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Sport Management within the College of Education and Human Development, where he served as the Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion from 2019-2023. His research is particularly concerned with addressing matters of diversity and systemic oppression, particularly race and racism at the intersections of sport, education, and society. He has drawn great inspiration from critical race theory (CRT) in centering the distinctive experiences and perspectives of Black athletes and other sportspersons as a counterspace to the white racial status quo. Dr. Singer is author of the book, Race, Sports, and Education: Improving Opportunities and Outcomes for Black Male College Athletes (2019, Harvard Education Press). His scholarship has also been featured in several academic journals, edited books, and other relevant outlets and platforms. Some of his current and ongoing work is focused on cross-racial coalitions in and through the field of sport management. Dr. Singer earned his PhD from The Ohio State University.
