Biography
Algae Guzmán (they/elle/she) is the Community Initiatives Coordinator of the Race and Ethnic Studies Institute. In 2024, they graduated from the University of Illinois Chicago with a master’s degree in Latin American and Latino studies, and a concentration in museum and exhibition studies. Their research has largely focused on the Rio Grande Valley region’s history and cultural placemaking strategies such as school-sponsored conjunto and mariachi programs, the focus of their master’s paper. In her previous roles with Baylor University, the Texas Historical Commission, and the Chicago History Museum, she has helped preserve the histories and intangible cultures of Latinos and other historically underrepresented communities.
