Biography
As an international student from Peru, my identity as a Latino researcher has shaped my research interests through an understanding of Latino communities’ depiction in the media. Growing up in Peru, a country with a large indigenous population, I witnessed the lack of presence of Indigenous depiction in the Latino media and how this issue forms part of a systematic oppression against the Latin American Indigenous population. At the same time, being a woman has helped me understand the gender inequalities that still exist in the system and made me more curious about how intersectionality can play an important role in the depiction and exclusion of Latino American Indigenous women.
My master’s thesis focused on the depiction of Indigenous communities in Peru during the presidential election in 2021. The method that I employed was a quantitative content analysis on the two main newspapers in Peru (El Comercio and La República) to identify the most common frames used when the Indigenous roots of the candidate and voters were mentioned.
I’m interested in working with a mix of quantitative (content analysis, survey) and qualitative methods (interviews, ethnography) that help me understand more in-depth the media depiction of Indigenous communities in different aspects: political events, entertaining shows, social media presence or fashion industry.
