Creative Work, 2018-2021

Our faculty publish novels and novellas, short stories and flash fiction, poems, screenplays, and creative nonfiction. Here are some recent highlights:

Marcela Fuentes’s short story “The Observable World” appeared in the Summer 2021, 50th anniversary edition of Ploughshares.

Susan Stabile’s creative nonfiction essay “Cavity Nesters” appeared in the Summer 2021  issue of the Indiana Review.  Her essay  “Mustard” won the Annie Dillard Award in Creative Nonfiction for 2017 and appeared in the Spring 2018 issue of the Bellingham Review.

Jason Harris’s novella, Master of Rods and Strings, was published by Vernacular Press in July 2021. See the interview with Dr. Harris here. 

Nandini Bhattacharya’s first novel, Love’s Garden, was published in 2020 by Aubade Publishing.  Dr. Bhattacharya talks about the process of writing her book here.

Christopher Manes’s poetry collection, Naming the Leper,  was published in 2020 by  LSU Press and won the 2021 Summerlee Book Prize awarded by The Center for History and Culture of Southeast Texas and the Upper Gulf Coast at Lamar University.   Between 1919 and 1941, five Landry siblings were diagnosed with “leprosy” and sent to the National Leprosarium in Carville, Louisiana, where they remained in quarantine until their deaths. Drawing on historical documents and imaginative reconstructions, Naming the Leper tells through poetry this family’s haunting story of exile and human suffering.

Mike Collins’s poem “Tight Like This, recorded 1928, Chicago, Illinois” appeared in The Rupture (February 2020) and was a finalist for the 2020  Best of the Net Anthology.  Dr. Collins also interviewed novelist and Booker Prize award winner Bernardine Evaristo in the Writer’s Chronicle for April 2020.

Lowell Mick White’s novel Normal School was published in 2019 by Buffalo Times Press.
