Abstract:
A doleful paradox occurs among Hispanics/Latinx populations in the United States concerning cancer. While Hispanics are less likely to be diagnosed with cancer than non-Hispanic whites, according to the American Cancer Society and the CDC, cancer is the first leading cause of death among Hispanics, accounting for 20% of deaths in 2016 among males. For Hispanic women is the first, accounting to about 22%. The bulk of this talk discusses the Latino Hybrid Collectif as an analytical framework to investigate these complex health relations. The talk is guided by the following overarching questions: a) how does immigration status affects or restricts access to health care, and if there is not access, what cultural strategies are utilized? b) how are coping strategies different for men and women? c) what role does religion or spirituality play in making or allowing patients and their families to cope with death?

Please note that this is not a lecture, and thus, is not suited for class attendance. The Colloquium Series is intended to provide the presenter with a forum to discuss their research and receive feedback from colleagues.

PLEASE NOTE: Unlike our Faculty and Graduate Fellows’ Colloquia, we do not pre-circulate a draft paper of the work-in progress for ACES Colloquia.
