Bio

Associate professor of practice Tom Burton earned his Master of Arts degree in photography from Ohio University’s Scripps College of Communication in 2021 where he researched 360-degree video for non-fiction storytelling as the 2018-19 Knight Fellow in the School of Visual Communication. He joined the Texas A&M University Department of Communication in 2019 as a lecturer and teaches courses in American mass media, mobile journalism, mass media writing, editing, interviewing, and fact-finding. He is the former editor of the National Press Photographers Association. He won multiple national awards as a photojournalist, editor and director of photography/video while working for the Orlando Sentinel for more than 30 years. He introduced video to print newsrooms, managed the transition to digital photography, and was active in early social media publishing. His work has appeared in many publications, including The New York Times, Time, U.S. News and World Report and the Los Angeles Times.
